‘Tis the season to pull out all the stops in the kitchen. Try this delicious family recipe from Pennsylvania Farm Bureau‘s Kristina Watson featuring one of the Keystone State’s major fruit crops: apples.

Ingredients

For the crust:

⅓ cup butter, softened
2 tablespoons sugar
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 cup flour
½ teaspoon baking powder

For the topping:

3 to 4 medium baking apples, thinly sliced and peeled*
¼ cup sugar**
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
1 maraschino cherry (optional)

Directions

To make the crust, mix all ingredients with a fork, and hands, if needed, until the dough begins to come together. Press evenly into 8-inch or 9-inch round pan.

Add topping seasons to the apples and mix well. Arrange apples evenly on the crust. Add maraschino cherry in center if desired.

Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes until crust is lightly golden on edges, and fruit is tender. Cooking time may vary depending on fruit used.

Excellent served with whipped cream or ice cream.

Recipe notes:

* Stone fruits such as peaches, Italian plums or cherries are delicious seasonal alternatives.

** Sugar can be adjusted based upon personal taste or the sweetness of the fruits used.
